In 1980, editor and publisher Moshe Y. Sachs set our ro create the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations, a new kind of reference work that would view every nation of the world as if through a "world mirror" and not from the perspective of any one country or group of countries. In 1981, a companion volume, the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States, was introduced. It was selected as an "Outstanding Reference Source" by the Reference Sources Committee of the American Library Association, Reference and Adult Services Division. The Gale Group now offers a revised and updated sixth edition of the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States. The fitness of the United States of America as a subject for encyclopedic study is plain. No discussion of world politics, economics, culture, technology, or military affairs would be complete without an intensive examination of the American achievement. What is not so obvious is why the editors chose to present this work as an encyclopedia of the states rather than of the United States. In so doing, they emphasize the fact that the United States is a federal union of separate states with divergent histories, traditions, resources, laws, and economic interests. Every state, large or small, is treated in an individual chapter, within a framework of 50 standard subject headings; generally, the more populous the state, the longer the article. The District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico each have their own chapters, and two additional articles describe in summary the other Caribbean and Pacific dependencies. The concluding chapter is an overview of the nation as a whole. Supplementing this textual material are tables of conversions and abbreviations, a glossary, and more than 50 black-and-white maps prepared especially for this encyclopedia. Publication of this encyclopedia was a collective effort that enlisted the talents of scholars, government agencies, editor-writers, artists, cartographers, typesetters, proofreaders, and many others...

Книга посвящена переселению болгар на Юг Российской империи в 50-е годы ХVIII — 60-е годы ХIХ в. Впервые показано в комплексе взаимовлияние внешних и внутренних факторов на миграцию болгар. Проанализирована иммиграционная политика России в Новороссии и Бессарабии и даны сравнительные характеристики основных этапов военного и экономического освоения Юга России. Выделены в динамике миграционные потоки, группы мигрантов — болгар и определены территории, заселяемые ими. Анализ источников позволил автору проанализировать тот комплекс мероприятий, которые были проведены государственными институтами России по освоению южных земель. Архивный материал, вводимый впервые, дает возможность изменить существующее в зарубежной историографии мнение о неподготовленности России к переселению болгар в 60-е годы XIX в.

Данное учебное пособие представляет собой разработку теоретического и практического курсов по демографии для студентов специальности «Менеджмент в социальной сфере». Пособие знакомит с основными понятиями и методами демографии, характеризует предполагаемую область применения полученного образования, дает первоначальные навыки аналитической деятельности. Учебное пособие апробировано при проведении курса «Демография» для студентов 1 курса специальности «Менеджмент в социальной сфере» очно-заочного отделения Томского политехнического университета. Пособие рекомендуется использовать при работе со студентами как очной, так и очно-заочной формы обучения.

У монографії молодого науковця М. Алфьорова на підставі значного архівного матеріалу, частина з якого вперше вводиться до наукового обігу, здійснено аналіз міграційної політики радянського уряду на Донбасі, розкрито перебіг міграційно-демографічних процесів та їх значення для економічного розвитку регіону у 1939-1959 рр. Книга розрахована як на фахівців істориків, так і на широке коло читачів, що цікавляться історією України і Донбаського краю.

Сборник включает статьи по большинству стран бывшего СССР, написанные национальными экспертами. В статьях анализируется, какие принципиальные изменения произошли в миграционных процессах в рассматриваемых государствах за последние 20 лет, какие векторы международной миграции сформировались и формируются, какую роль играет международная миграция для развития этих стран, какие меры государственной миграционной политики применяются. Публикуемые в сборнике материалы могут не отображать точку зрения МОМ и ЮНИСЕФ. Авторы несут ответственность за их достоверность. Материалы серии имеют как научный, так и учебный характер и, соответственно, могут быть использованы в учебном процессе.

The idea for this edited collection arose out of a series of interdisciplinary workshops entitled ‘Gender and Migration in 21st Century Europe’ hosted jointly by the Migration Unit and the Feminist Legal Research Unit at the University of Liverpool between October 2006 and April 2007. The same title is adopted for this collection which draws on the presentations and discussions that took place during the workshops coupled with additional invited contributions from notable scholars in the field. In referring to ‘gender’ the aim is to explore how social, economic, legal, political and cultural processes implied by migration govern and reinforce relations between the sexes – not just between men and women, but between female and male children, and between girls and women. Our interpretation of ‘migration’ is also broad to encompass a range of geographical, economic and personal trajectories into and within Europe as well as the emergence and effectiveness of new regulatory mechanisms to address issues of ‘forced’ migration (notably trafficking), cross-national family breakdown and employment migration in an expanding European Union.

Настоящая монография является первой в мировой литературе книгой, посвященной последовательному изложению основных результатов теоретических исследований переноса энергии электронного возбуждения в конденсированных средах. Розглянуто еволюцію політики російського уряду до болгарських переселенців. Рекомендується науковцям, аспірантам, студентам - всім тим, хто цікавиться історичним минулим.

A fifth of West Germany's post-1945 population consisted of ethnic German refugees expelled from Eastern Europe, a quarter of whom came from Silesia. As the richest territory lost inside Germany's interwar borders, Silesia was a leading objective for territorial revisionists, many of whom were themselves expellees. The Lost German East examines how and why millions of Silesian expellees came to terms with the loss of their homeland. Applying theories of memory and nostalgia, as well as recent studies on ethnic cleansing, Andrew Demshuk shows how, over time, most expellees came to recognize that the idealized world they mourned no longer existed. Revising the traditional view that most of those expelled sought a restoration of prewar borders so they could return to the east, Demshuk offers a new answer to the question of why, after decades of violent upheaval, peace and stability took root in West Germany during the tense early years of the Cold War.

Will 'making a Living' remain a dream for the deprived and excluded? Jobs are one of Europe's most important problems. Employment provides the basic means of distributing wealth in society, in providing for families, and ensuring pensions for the elderly. Yet unemployment, and increasingly 'non-employment', continues at near record levels in the European Union. Making a Living in Europe shows how the culture of work has been transformed in the industrialised nations of the EU. Exploring the relationship between employment change, society and economic restructuring, the shift toward 'flexible' work for women in services, away from traditional industrial jobs for men, is demonstrated within three key sectors: business services, retailing and tourism. The outcome of change is discussed in terms of shifts of people and jobs from urban to rural areas. Europe must be understood in the context of the new Europe, of change in the USA and of global change. Drawing on examples from UK and European Regions and USA, the author challenges long-standing assumptions about changes in economy and society and highlights the need for stronger local and European policies to reduce inequality at large and contribute positively to local people's struggles to make a living in Europe.
