A novel approach to pattern matching is presented in which time complexity is reduced by two orders of magnitude compared to traditional approaches. The suggested approach uses an efficient projection scheme which bounds the distance between a pattern and an image window using very few operations on average. The projection framework is combined with a rejection scheme which allows rapid rejection of image windows that are distant from the pattern. Experiments show that the approach is effective even under very noisy conditions. The approach described here can also be used in classification schemes where the projection values serve as input features that are informative and fast to extract.

This book is the only account of what the bee, as an example of an insect, actually detects with its eyes. Bees detect some visual features such as edges and colours, but there is no sign that they reconstruct patterns or put together features to form objects. Bees detect motion but have no perception of what it is that moves, and certainly they do not recognize “things” by their shapes. Yet they clearly see well enough to fly and find food with a minute brain. Bee vision is therefore relevant to the construction of simple artificial visual systems, for example for mobile robots. The surprising conclusion is that bee vision is adapted to the recognition of places, not things. In this volume, Adrian Horridge also sets out the curious and contentious history of how bee vision came to be understood, with an account of a century of neglect of old experimental results, errors of interpretation, sharp disagreements, and failures of the scientific method. The design of the experiments and the methods of making inferences from observations are also critically examined, with the conclusion that scientists are often hesitant, imperfect and misleading, ignore the work of others, and fail to consider alternative explanations. The erratic path to understanding makes interesting reading for anyone with an analytical mind who thinks about the methods of science or the engineering of seeing machines.

Color Theory and Modeling for Computer Graphics, Visualization, and Multimedia Applications deals with color vision and visual computing. Architectural Acoustics presents a comprehensive technical overview of the field at a level suitable for working practitioners as well as advanced undergraduate or introductory graduate architecture or engineering course. The book is structured as a logical progression through acoustic interactions. Beginning with an architectural history, it reviews the fundamentals of acoustics, human perception and reaction to sound, acoustic noise measurements and noise metrics, and environmental noise. It then moves into wave acoustics, sound and solid surfaces, sound in enclosed spaces, sound transmission loss, sound transmission in buildings, vibration and vibration isolation, noise transmission in floor systems, noise in mechanical systems, and sound attenuation in ducts. Chapters on specific design problems follow including treatment of multifamily dwellings, office buildings, rooms for speech, sound reinforcement systems, rooms for music, multipurpose rooms, auditoriums, sanctuaries, and studios and listening rooms. While providing a thorough overview of acoustics, it also includes the theory of loudspeaker systems and sound system modeling as well as an in-depth presentation of computer modeling, ray tracing and auralization. It will be particularly beneficial for architects and engineers working in fields where speech intelligibility, music appreciation, and noise isolation are critical.

This book covers creative ways to successfully balance four major aspects of life: family, money, work and time; the program rests on what the authors call three gotta do's--validate expectations, optimize effort and develop navigational intelligence.

Tibetan Buddhist writings frequently state that many of the things we perceive in the world are in fact illusory, as illusory as echoes or mirages. In Twelve Examples of Illusion, Jan Westerhoff offers an engaging look at a dozen illusions--including magic tricks, dreams, rainbows, and reflections in a mirror--showing how these phenomena can give us insight into reality. For instance, he offers a fascinating discussion of optical illusions, such as the wheel of fire (the "wheel" seen when a torch is swung rapidly in a circle), discussing Tibetan explanations of this phenomenon as well as the findings of modern psychology, and significantly clarifying the idea that most phenomena--from chairs to trees--are similar illusions. The book uses a variety of crystal-clear examples drawn from a wide variety of fields, including contemporary philosophy and cognitive science, as well as the history of science, optics, artificial intelligence, geometry, economics, and literary theory. Throughout, Westerhoff makes both Buddhist philosophical ideas and the latest theories of mind and brain come alive for the general reader.

Утверджені за тих часів концепції дружби народів СРСР та українсько-російського братерства чинні у політичному дискурсі дотепер. Ба більше, зужиті ідеологеми тяжіють і над найзатятішими опонентами всього «совєтського» в сучасній Україні: ті також вірять в об’єктивне існування нації як органічної спільноти й так само уявляють історію як природний лінійний розвиток нації на шляху до здобуття державности (тільки справжньої, а не у формі «Української РСР»). Концепція «возз’єднання» України з Росією 1654 року вже великою мірою скомпрометована, але й далі живе поняття «возз’єднання» всіх українських етнічних земель у складі Української РСР протягом 1939–1945 років, – а саме сталінські ідеологи вперше описали ці події такою мовою. Цю книжку, що її вперше надрукувало видавництво Торонтського університету у 2004 році, присвячено репрезентаціям минулого в українській науці та культурі сталінського часу. Автор підважує стереотипні уявлення про сталінізм як всеохопну й дієву диктатуру й на основі численних архівних джерел аналізує обмеженість і часту неефективність державного контролю над культурою, важливу роль української інтеліґенції у виробленні радянської моделі історичної пам’яті та можливість «прочитати» ідеологічно витримані твори в українському патріотичному дусі. Країна Ірредента – країна, позбавлена можливості до самовідтворення, до самовизначення, до самоутвердження. Увесь її шлях – мов туго натягнута линва між Сициллою і Харибдою. Усе її існування – історія моторошного балансування. Уже з самої назви – що мов палюче тавро – свого твору Роман Іваничук розпочинає вельми нелегкий шлях до пошуків відповіді на ріторичне питання української історії: чому, як трапилося, що народ, наділений потужною креативністю, природним талантом, позбавлений звичайного талану?.. Політичний роман «Країна Ірредента» за своєю композицією нагадує дивний чорно-білий колаж з різних часових пластів українського буття, пронизаних, мов життєдайним світлом, прагненням – попри весь трагізм долі – будь-що ВІДБУТИСЯ. Повість «Злодії та Апостоли» начебто схожа на пораду – як треба шукати свого родоводу. Та водночас у творі постає панорамна картина історії Гуцульщини на чотирьохсотлітньому відтинку часу із звичаями, віруваннями, мовою та ментальністю горян, духовний світ яких сьогодні зазнав поважних зовнішніх змін, проте у своїй суті залишився предковічним. Фабула повісті ґрунтується на реальному житті гуцулів, однак автор розкошує домислом, що надає творові романтичного шарму.
