This is the first attempt to collect published and unpublished results on incline algebra, which encompasses Boolean algebra and fuzzy algebra. In order to read this monograph, the reader should have had the usual first year graduate courses in mathematics plus an elementary knowledge of combinatorial theory, graph theory, lattice theory, matrix theory (including the Boolean and fuzzy cases), semi-group theory, and semiring theory.

For almost half a century, Ukrainian history did not exist in Ukraine as an independent field of scholarly research or as a subject of instruction. After the Second World War, the “history of the Ukrainian SSR” was established as a regional subunit of the “History of the USSR.” Outside Ukraine, its history was a subject of scholarly research and ideological interpretation in diaspora historiography and in a few small universitylevel institutions that generally found themselves on the margins of the academic world. After 1991, public demand for accounts of Ukrainian history arose in Ukraine and abroad: in both cases, the motives were purely pragmatic and instrumental. In Ukraine, the overriding concern was to legitimize the state in ideological and “scholarly” terms and provide for the civic education of the nation, which took the form of “creating Ukrainians.” Beyond the borders of the new state, interest in its history was inspired by efforts to understand and explain the current situation: thus, most Western research on Ukraine concentrates on studies in politics, international affairs, economics, and sociology, while historical works are generally either popular outlines or highly specialized investigations.

Physicochemical characterisation of casein micelles suspended in milk ultrafiltrate and enriched with different cations (Fe, Cu, Ca, Zn and Mg) was investigated. After addition of 2.5–8.0 mmol kg−1 of cations, associations of added cation, citrate, inorganic phosphate and calcium with casein micelles were observed. The order of association of cations with casein micelles was Fe3+ Zn2+ Ca2+ Cu2+ Mg2+. At the same time, the casein content increased in the casein micelles while the water content decreased. Changes in hydrophobicity and zeta potential of casein micelles were also determined while no variation in the average diameter was detected. In the presence of 8.0 mmol kg−1 of magnesium or ferric iron, heat stability (115 °C for 30 min) of casein micelles was decreased. From these results, a mechanism of cation association with casein micelles is proposed, highlighting the determinant role of ultrafiltrable citrate and inorganic phosphate. This mechanism is discussed in relation to modifications in physicochemical characteristics of casein micelles.

Many physical processes are difficult or even impossible to study by conventional experimental methods. As computing power has increased, it has become possible to model some of these processes by sophisticated computer code. In such cases, the code can serve as a proxy for the physical process. As in a physical experiment, one can vary the inputs to the code and observe how the process output is affected. Such studies are called computer experiments and are becoming increasingly popular surrogates for, and adjuncts to, physical experiments. Much of the methodology for designing, modeling, and analyzing computer experiments can be found only in research papers. The goal of this book is to make these methods accessible to a more general audience. To accomplish this, we have tried to keep the mathematics at a level that will be understandable to readers with Masters level training in Statistics. This has been a challenging task. For example, Gaussian process models are a popular way to describe the output of computer experiments, but Gaussian process models are mathematically complex and likely to be unfamiliar to many readers. We provide an introduction to these models and present references for those who wish to study additional mathematical details of such processes. In other chapters, we relegate mathematical details to notes at the chapter end. To make the book more useful for practitioners, we provide software that can be used to fit the models discussed in the book. Instructions for using the software are included in an Appendix.
