Як свідчить листування Сковороди, цей трактат писався ним з перервами протягом кількох років. Харківське намісництво, про відкриття якого згадує Сковорода у супровідному листі, відкрите 29 жовтня 1780 р. Та є різні підстави вважати, що й у той час твір не був закінчений. Зокрема, листи до Я. Правицького дозволяють датувати трактат 1780 — 1788 рр. Зберігся автограф і п'ять списків твору. Вперше надруковано у виданні В. Бонч-Бруєвича 1912 р. Трактат присвячений проблемі алегоричного тлумачення Біблії. її образи й фігури, на думку автора, утворюють особливий символічний світ. З їх допомогою, вважає Сково­рода, можна знайти й пізнати вічне начало у макрокосмі. У цьому й полягає важливе моральне, повчальне значення алегорично витлумачених образів Біблії, наприклад соляного стовпа, в який перетворилася жінка Лота, врятованого царя Содому й Гомори. В образі содомської людини Сковорода критикує моральні вади своїх сучасників, охоплених жадобою збагачення й користолюбством. Автор протиставляє їм образ духовної людини, що досягнула повної свободи й досконалості. У трактаті розкриваються згубні наслідки буквального розуміння Біблії.
