Many physical processes are difficult or even impossible to study by conventional experimental methods. As computing power has increased, it has become possible to model some of these processes by sophisticated computer code. In such cases, the code can serve as a proxy for the physical process. As in a physical experiment, one can vary the inputs to the code and observe how the process output is affected. Such studies are called computer experiments and are becoming increasingly popular surrogates for, and adjuncts to, physical experiments. Much of the methodology for designing, modeling, and analyzing computer experiments can be found only in research papers. The goal of this book is to make these methods accessible to a more general audience. To accomplish this, we have tried to keep the mathematics at a level that will be understandable to readers with Masters level training in Statistics. This has been a challenging task. For example, Gaussian process models are a popular way to describe the output of computer experiments, but Gaussian process models are mathematically complex and likely to be unfamiliar to many readers. We provide an introduction to these models and present references for those who wish to study additional mathematical details of such processes. In other chapters, we relegate mathematical details to notes at the chapter end. To make the book more useful for practitioners, we provide software that can be used to fit the models discussed in the book. Instructions for using the software are included in an Appendix. Examples of the use of the software are interspersed throughout the book. As the software is updated, new versions (and an expanded user's manual) will be put on line through the book web site.)

The work of Richard M. Stallman literally speaks for itself. From the documented source code to the published papers to the recorded speeches, few people have expressed as much willingness to lay their thoughts and their work on the line. Such openness-if one can pardon a momentary un-Stallman adjective-is refreshing. After all, we live in a society that treats information, especially personal information, as a valuable commodity. The question quickly arises. Why would anybody want to part with so much information and yet appear to demand nothing in return? As we shall see in later chapters, Stallman does not part with his words or his work altruistically. Every program, speech, and on-the-record bon mot comes with a price, albeit not the kind of price most people are used to paying. I bring this up not as a warning, but as an admission. As a person who has spent the last year digging up facts on Stallman's personal history, it's more than a little intimidating going up against the Stallman oeuvre. "Never pick a fight with a man who buys his ink by the barrel," goes the old Mark Twain adage. In the case of Stallman, never attempt the definitive biography of a man who trusts his every thought to the public record. In the three hundred years since his death, Cook's reputation has been much discussed, opinion ranging from Britain's celebration of his achievement to more subjective assessments of the long-term implications of his voyages in those countries of the Pacific which he visited. The thirteen essays in this book, grouped in four sections, continue the debate. 'The Years in England' cover Cook's Whitby background and the part played by the Royal Society in the Pacific ventures of the period; 'The Pacific Voyages' investigates the clash between the Endeavour's crew and Aborigines on the banks of the Endeavour River; the process by which Cook and his crews became 'Polynesianised'; Cook's visit to the Hawaiian Islands; and his visit to Nootka Sound on his final voyage. 'Captain Cook and his Contemporaries' views other European explorers in the Pacific, and concludes with an analysis of Russian attitudes towards Cook. 'The Legacy of Captain Cook' compares Cook's death on Hawaii and the later killing of a missionary on Eromanga; examines fluctuations in Cook's reputation; and describes life on board the replica of the Endeavour.

Adolf Hitler enlisted in the Bavarian Army in august 1914 as a war volunteer. Fanatically devoted to the German cause, between 1914 and 1918 Hitler served with distinction and sometimes reckless bravery, winning both classes of Iron Cross. Using memoirs, military records, regimental, divisional and official war histories as well as (wherever possible) Hitler's own words, this book seeks to reconstruct a period in his life that has been neglected in the literature. It is also the story of a German regiment (16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry, or List Regiment), which fought in all the main battles on the Western Front. As a frontline soldier Hitler began his 'study' of the black art of propaganda; and, as he himself maintained, the List Regiment provided him with his 'university of life'. This is not only an account of the fighting, however. Some of the most profound influences on Hitler occurred on home leave or as a result of official wartime propaganda, which he devoured uncritically. His conversion from passive pathological anti-Semitism began while invalided in Germany in 1916-17. The language of anti-Bolshevik 'Jewish virus' propaganda became Hitler's language, confirmed, as he saw it, by the 'infected' recruits to the List Regiment in 1918. Hitler is here presented less as the product of high-cultural forces than as an avid reader and gullible consumer of state propaganda, which fed his prejudices. He was a 'good soldier' but also a 'true believer' in fact and practice. It is no exaggeration to say that every military decision made by Hitler between 1939 and 1945 was in some way influenced or coloured by his experiences with the List Regiment between 1914 and 1918.
