In 1980, editor and publisher Moshe Y. Sachs set our ro create the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations, a new kind of reference work that would view every nation of the world as if through a "world mirror" and not from the perspective of any one country or group of countries. Richard P. Feynman was one of this century’s most brilliant theoretical physicists and original thinkers. Born in Far Rockaway, New York, in 1918, he studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he graduated with a BS in 1939. He went on to Princeton and received his Ph.D. in 1942. During the war years he worked at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. He became Professor of Theoretical Physics at Cornell University, where he worked with Hans Bethe. He all but rebuilt the theory of quantum electrodynamics and it was for this work that he shared the Nobel Prize in 1965. His simplified rules of calculation became standard tools of theoretical analysis in both quantum electrodynamics and high-energy physics. Feynman was a visiting professor at the California Institute of Technology in 1950, where he later accepted a permanent faculty appointment, and became Richard Chace Tolman Professor of Theoretical Physics in 1959. He had an extraordinary ability to communicate his science to audiences at all levels, and was a well-known and popular lecturer. Richard Feynman died in 1988 after a long illness. Freeman Dyson, of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, called him ‘the most original mind of his generation’, while in its obituary The New York Times described him as ‘arguably the most brilliant, iconoclastic and influential of the postwar generation of theoretical physicists’. A number of collections and adaptations of his lectures have been published, including The Feynman Lectures on Physics, QED (Penguin, 1990), The Character of Physical Law (Penguin, 1992), Six Easy Pieces (Penguin, 1998), The Meaning of It All (Penguin, 1999) and Six Not-So-Easy Pieces (Allen Lane, 1998; Penguin, 1999). The Feynman Lectures on Gravitation and The Feynman Lectures on Computation are both forthcoming in Penguin. His memoirs, Surely You’re Joking, Mr Feynman, were published in 1985.

The Bulletin on Narcotics is a United Nations journal that has been in continuous publication since 1949. It is printed in all six official languages of the United Nations—Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. The Bulletin provides information on developments in drug control at the local, national, regional and international levels that can be of benefit to the international community. The present issue of the Bulletin, whose guest editor is Martin Bouchard of Simon Fraser University in Canada, is focused on measurement issues in drug policy analysis. It consists of a selection of papers presented at the Third Annual Conference of the International Society for the Study of Drug Policy, held in Vienna on 2 and 3 March 2009. This supplement to the consolidated edition of the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) provides full examples in sixteen languages of cataloguing, i.e., the languages used for notes and other non-transcribed parts of the description. The purpose of the supplement is to make it easy to understand the structure of the ISBD and to improve efficiency in the practical application of the consolidated edition of the ISBD. A preliminary edition of the supplement was published online in late 2009. With the revision of the consolidated ISBD in 2011, it was necessary to revise the Examples supplement. As a result, the new ISBD Examples Study Group prepared tentative text for content form and media type in Area 0 for the examples in the previous version of this document. In addition, some of the examples were put into paragraph format instead of tabular format to demonstrate the differences in display.

Aviation historians often dismiss the Polyikarpov I-16 because it did not fare well against its more modern adversaries in WWII. It was often referred to in the West by the disparaging nickname of Rata, the Russian word for rat! Nikolay Polyikarpov's I-16 was nevertheless an outstanding fighter in its day--among other things, because it was the world's first monoplane fighter with a retractable undercarriage. Its capabilities were demonstrated effectively during the Spanish Civil War and it was still in front line service when the German armed forces fell on the Soviet Union in 1941. This book details every variant of this diminutive fighter, including development aircraft and unbuilt projects. An account is also given of Polyikarpov's early monoplane fighters that presaged the I-16 and of the later designs that evolved from it. Details are given of all surviving examples including the six aircraft that were restored to airworthy condition in Russia in the 1990s.
