Данный сборник содержит материалы Международного круглого стола на тему: «65 лет с начала депортации жителей Украины в Казахстан», который состоялся 20 ноября 2012 года на базе Карагандинского государственного технического университета (Республика Казахстан). Начиная с 1947 года в Казахстан было депортировано около 500 тыс украинцев. В том числе, 171,5 тыс. человек – «семьи участников банд ОУН, пособники членам ОУН и члены их семей, кулаки-националисты и их семьи»; около 300 тыс. украинцев, возвратившихся из лагерей Германии и выселенных «за государственную измену» на спецпоселениев восточные районы СССР. В Казахстане с большим вниманием относятсяк сохранению исторической правды о периоде тоталитарного режима. По инициативе Президента Нурсултана Назарбаева установлен День памятижертв политических репрессий и массового голода - 31 мая, открыты музейно-мемориальные комплексы, поставлены монументы, пострадавшим в тегоды, осуществляется научно-образовательная и публицистическая работа. Государство оказывает значительное содействие для сохранения памяти о жертвах сталинских репрессий - представителей разных стран и национальностей. В частности, были установлены памятные знаки украинцам, грузинам, азербайджанцам, полякам, литовцам (на месте лагеря "АЛЖИР"), а также чеченцам, японцам, корейцам, немцам, туркам и другим репрессированным народам из 15 республик бывшего СССР (с. Спасское, с. Долинка Карагандинской области). Научно-образовательными учреждениями и общественностью Казахстана осуществляется активная поисковая работа и по теме «Голодомора», в том числе и в Казахстане, где в1932-33 гг. погибло почти 40% населения. С обретением независимости Республики Казахстан активно осуществляется реабилитация многих репрессированных лиц, которая сопровождается поддержкой со стороны государства и местных органов власти.Поэтому организаторы круглого стола посвятили выпуск данного сборника Дню Первого Президента Республики Казахстан, благодаря которому в Казахстане стало возможным не только проведение таких мероприятий, но и то, что с первых лет новейшей истории независимой Республики и поныне реализуется последовательная деятельность органов государственной власти по увековечиванию памяти невинно пострадавших людей, созданию благоприятного климата в стране для осуществления мирного труда каждого труженика, проживающего на её территории. Поставленные цели, по мнению участников, достигнуты. Но главный итог его работы: впервые в качестве отдельной страницы трагической истории репрессий в СССР обсуждена тема массовой депортации украинского населения в Казахстан после Второй мировой войны. 4 Эта тема актуальна для всех, кто интересуется историей политических репрессий и судьбами миллионов людей, насильственно изгнанных со своей земли.

The wider peacebuilding field has long suffered under the weight of an intriguing paradox: Violence has never been more studied, understood in terms of its dynamics and patterns, and officially identified as a policy challenge than it has in past the twenty years. And violence continues to unfold with extraordinary resilience in too many communities around the world. In this book Joe Bock makes a significant step into unpacking and suggesting creative ways to respond to this dilemma. I say that as a practitioner- scholar with thirty years of experience in community conflict and as a critic of the difficulties that this promising area of exploration — all too often misnamed as conflict prevention — has failed to deliver. From the standpoint of the practice of strategic peacebuilding several key contributions are worth highlighting from this book.

In this book, Derek Cohen studies the relationship of Shakespearean drama to the Western culture of violence. He argues that violence is an inherent feature and form of patriarchy and that its production and control is one of the dominant motives of the political system. Shakespeare's plays supply examples of the way in which the patriarchy of his plays - and hence, perhaps, of modern Western culture - absorbs, naturalizes, and legitimizes violence in its attempts to maintain political control over its subjects.

Historian Eliza Earle Ferguson’s meticulously researched study of domestic violence among the working class in France uncovers the intimate details of daily life and the complex workings of court proceedings in fin-de-siècle Paris. With detective-like methods, Ferguson pores through hundreds of court records to understand why so many perpetrators of violent crime were fully acquitted. She finds that court verdicts depended on community standards for violence between couples. Her search uncovers voluminous testimony from witnesses, defendants, and victims documenting the conflicts and connections among men and women who struggled to balance love, desire, and economic need in their relationships. Ferguson's detailed analysis of these cases enables her to reconstruct the social, cultural, and legal conditions in which they took place. Her ethnographic approach offers unprecedented insight into the daily lives of nineteenth-century Parisians, revealing how they chose their partners, what they fought about, and what drove them to violence. In their battles over money and sex, couples were in effect testing, stretching, and enforcing gender roles. Gender and Justice will interest social and legal historians for its explanation of how the working class of fin-de-siècle Paris went about their lives and navigated the judicial system. Gender studies scholars will find Ferguson’s analysis of the construction of gender particularly trenchant.

This book grew out of a conference organized by the German Historical Institute (GHI) on May 23-5, 1996, iii Berlin. For three days, thirty-five scholars from n\ne countries became acht-und-sechziger (sixty-eighters), not on the streets and barricades but in lively debate over the events and significance of the momentous year 1968. This book consists of revised versions of many of the original papers as well as entirely new essays that complement our overall theme. I thank all of the authors and also those who participated in the conference but whose work could not be included here. I am grateful to Carl-Ludwig Holtfrerich (Free University Berlin), Luisa Passerini (European University Institute, Florence), Keith A. Reader (University of Newcastle), and Dieter Rucht (Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin) for chairing the various sessions and for guiding us through spirited discussions. I shall miss these last three and a half years of spirited collaboration among three very engaged historians. The topic of this book dovetails nicely with the efforts of the GHI in Washington to promote comparative research. In fact, most of the four to five international conferences the Institute rganizes annually are based on this perspective, comparing events, ideas, and structures in the United States and Europe. At times we have even taken a global perspective, with 1968: The World Traniformed being a case in point. In this age of globalization, historians should also become global players - at least mentally.

Completely revised and updated, this new edition of Terror in the Mind of God incorporates the events of September 11, 2001 into Mark Juergensmeyer's landmark study of religious terrorism. Juergensmeyer explores the 1993 World Trade Center explosion, Hamas suicide bombings, the Tokyo subway nerve gas attack, and the killing of abortion clinic doctors in the United States. His personal interviews with 1993 World Trade Center bomber Mahmud Abouhalima, Christian Right activist Mike Bray, Hamas leaders Sheik Yassin and Abdul Azis Rantisi, and Sikh political leader Simranjit Singh Mann, among others, take us into the mindset of those who perpetrate and support violence in the name of religion.

The book is intended as a specialist textbook that will support a course or lecture block on LGBTQ psychology (or the psychology of sexualities and genders). At the same time, each chapter is intended to stand alone, and provide an introduction to a particular aspect of LGBTQ psychology, so LGBTQ perspectives and experiences can be incorporated into a wide range of psychology topics such as, for example, lifespan development, prejudice, health, research methods, family and relationships. Readers ‘dipping in’ to some of the later chapters can consult the glossary for definitions of key concepts.

The transnational circulation ofpeople and ideas is transforming the world we live in, but grasping its full complexity is extraordinarily difficult. To do so, it is essential to focus on specific places where transnational flows are happening. The international human rights movement against violence to women provides a valuable site for understanding how new categories ofmeaning emerge and are applied to social practices around the world. These meanings are often enthusiastically appropriated by regional, national, and local social movements and used to criticize everyday practices ofviolence. In order for human rights ideas to be effective, however, they need to be translated into local terms and situated within local contexts of power and meaning. They need, in other words, to be remade in the vernacular. How does this happen? Do people in local communities reframe human rights ideas to fit into their system ofcultural meanings? Do they resist ideas that seem unfamiliar? Examining this process is crucial to understanding the way human rights act in the contemporaryworld.
