FLA/FAIFE places great importance on its biennial World Report. This carefully researched survey provides the information professions with a regular insight into the state of intellectual freedom worldwide as it relates to libraries. It seems to be the nature of the sector that few out and out causes celebres emerge (although a few could be named). The world of journalism is a constant ferment of dangerous and threatening activity, and book publishing produces difficult cases all the time. Internet problems feature prominently in the press and on the Internet itself. Yet it might be possible to assume that libraries exist in an intellectual freedom safe haven. Unfortunately this is not the case. Libraries also share in the threats to privacy and the restrictions on access that trouble the world of knowledge and communication generally. Possibly because the threats creep up on libraries and are often experienced at second hand (for instance, through the suppression of a book or the blocking of a website), they are easier to ignore. The World Report is intended to open our eyes, alert us to dangers and enable us to fight emerging threats or support colleagues in other parts of the world.

The Kanazawa Institute of Technology is Japan's largest institution of higher education specializing in engineering and technology. It is a world leader and collaborator in electronic initiatives, often on the forefront of systems design and telecommunications advancement. It is also the site of an annual symposium series on digital library development. Marcum and George have pulled together an international cadre of leading thinkers and experimenters, all of whom have participated in these symposia, to provide their considered opinions concerning the influence of digital technology on teaching and learning in general, and the role of the library in the educational enterprise in particular. Their contributions have, in turn, been arranged into four thematic groupings, which range from envisioning the future, and facing major challenges, to creating projects and programs, and developing digital libraries. An informative read for anyone involved in higher education.

The task of compiling a register of standards and other works of a similar nature in the field of preservation and conservation is daunting, especially when it is intended to be useful in an international context. Over time, the goal of this work is to be comprehensive in the sense of including citations to translations of documents in addition to the original sources, while still being relatively compact, current, and focused.

This supplement to the consolidated edition of the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) provides full examples in sixteen languages of cataloguing, i.e., the languages used for notes and other non-transcribed parts of the description. The purpose of the supplement is to make it easy to understand the structure of the ISBD and to improve efficiency in the practical application of the consolidated edition of the ISBD. A preliminary edition of the supplement was published online in late 2009. With the revision of the consolidated ISBD in 2011, it was necessary to revise the Examples supplement. As a result, the new ISBD Examples Study Group prepared tentative text for content form and media type in Area 0 for the examples in the previous version of this document. In addition, some of the examples were put into paragraph format instead of tabular format to demonstrate the differences in display.

These Guidelines have been produced by a working group representing IFLA and the ICA that was commissioned by UNESCO to establish guidelines for digitization programmes for collections and holdings in the public domain. The contract specified that the guidelines should so far as possible be particularly applicable to institutions in the countries of the developing world. Members of the group were nominated by IFLA and ICA and their activities were coordinated by Sjoerd Koopman, Coordinator of Professional Activities for IFLA.

During the course of its preliminary research, the working group was struck with how the concept of a hospital library differs so in different parts of the world. It found, for example, that in some countries, the term 'hospital library' almost always signified a biomedical/health sciences library, while in others, it usually meant a library providing leisure reading materials for patients. In still other countries, 'hospital library' could signify either a biomedical/health sciences library or a patients' library, with the latter providing leisure reading collections or health information materials or both.

The publication of the Guidelines for the Application of the ISBDs to the Description of Component Parts marks the completion of a long and complex effort to establish an internationally accepted framework for the description of items such as journal articles, chapters and other parts of monographs, individual tracks on sound recordings, and other types of “works within works”. From the outset it was recognized that achieving acceptance of such a framework would be difficult, particularly inasmuch as the potential implementors are divided between two communities that over time have established rather different practices and traditions with respect to bibliographic description: the library community, on the one hand, with its cataloguing tradition; and, on the other, the abstracting and indexing community with its citation practices. Although the initiative was taken by the library community, through IFLA, and was conceived within the overall programme for the development of International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD), it was acknowledged that the requirements and constraints of the abstracting and indexing community would have to be addressed in parallel with those of the library community in order to ensure that the resulting framework would meet the objective of providing the necessary bridge between the descriptions formulated in the two communities.
