The work of Alexander A. Potebnja, a leading Ukrainian linguist of the nineteenth century, has significantly influenced modern literary criticism, particularly Russian formalism and structuralism. Potebnja's theory, known as potebnjanstvo (Potebnjanism), flourished in the Russian Empire and in the Soviet Union during the 1920s. It attracted scores of adherents and gave rise to an influential literary journal and a formal critical school at Kharkiv. Yet despite his remarkable achievements in linguistics and literary theory, Potebnja's work was officially renounced in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, and in the West he remains virtually unknown.

The history of a language can be understood as the combination of its internal history and external history. The internal history of a language includes all events of a linguistic nature, such as phonological, grammatical, and lexical changes. Among the questions it addresses are these:What changes have occurred in the language’s inventory of sounds over time?What grammatical structures have been lost, and what other structures have arisen to replace them?What have been the most important sources of new words? To what extent have other words become obsolete? External history is the history of the people or peopleswho speak the language, though naturally a language history focuses principally on the events that have had linguistic repercussions. Thus, external history addresses questions such as the following:What peoples spoke the language originally?What other peoples adopted the languag and under what circumstances?What invasions, migrations, and other events have contributed to the current geographic and demographic distribution of the language? What cultural developments have affected the evolution of the language? Ideally, we would like to find one-to-one correspondences between these two perspectives—the internal and the external—but in practice this is rarely possible. Even if it is unquestionable that cultural events such as the Renaissance and the technological revolution of the twentieth century have fostered the acceptance of largen umbers of neologisms—in the first case primarily from Italian and in the second from English—in general it is difficult to find concrete correspondences, for example, between the pace of phonological change and periods of peace or war, or between specific grammatical changes and migrations of populations.

Why write a book on phonetic transcription? After more than half a century of major advances in instrumental phonetics which have rightly taken credit for broadening and deepening our knowledge of the structure of speech, it can appear to many that symbols and transcription have had their day. What, it might be asked, can [d] ever tell us that spectrograms, palatograms and the like cannot? If traditional transcription is not to fade away or be made the amanuensis of automated forms of analysis, then a case must be made for it on the grounds that it can express something which instruments cannot. Arguments need to be put against the view that there is nothing to be gained in phonetics by listening analytically to people speaking and transcribing what we hear. Marshalling the arguments provides the opportunity not only to examine critically the aims and methods of transcription but also to think about how phonetic symbols work in relation to phonetic theory on the one hand and phonetic data on the other; to consider, that is, the manner of their semiosis.
