Volume One of Anarchism: A Documentary History of Libertarian Ideas, is a comprehensive and far ranging collection of anarchist writings from the feudal era (300) to 1939. Edited and introduced by noted anarchist scholar Robert Graham, the collection will include the definitive texts from the anarchist tradition of political thought, beginning with some of the earliest writings from China and Europe against feudal servitude and authority. The collection will then go on to document the best of the anti-authoritarian writings from the English and French Revolutions and the early development of libertarian socialist ideas, including such writers as Gerrard Winstanley, William Godwin, Charles Fourier, Max Stirner, as well as the early anarchist writings of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Michael Bakunin, Peter Kropotkin, Errico Malatesta, Elisee Reclus, Leo Tolstoy, and Emma Goldman. This incomparable volume deals both with the positive ideas and proposals the anarchists tried to put into practice, and with the anarchist critiques of the authoritarian theories and practices confronting them during these years with their revolutionary upheavals. Robert Graham has written extensively on the history of anarchist ideas. He is the author of “The Role of Contract in Anarchist Ideology,” in the Routledge publication, For Anarchism, edited by David Goodway, and he wrote the introduction to the 1989 Pluto Press edition of Proudhon’s General Idea of the Revolution in the 19th Century, originally published in 1851. He has been doing research and writing on the historical development of anarchist ideas for over 20 years and is a well respected commentator in the field. Includes original portraits of the anarchists drawn by Maurice Spira specifically for this book Spira’s imagery is rooted to the political, his subject matter global. Socialism has been one of the most resilient modern sociopolitical ideologies. At a time when communism has been “defeated,” socialism has continued growing and, if anything, gained from communism’s losses. But it still faces incessant criticism from capitalism and neoliberalism and is experiencing difficulty in some places. There is considerable concern among the leadership and sometimes friction with the rank and file, and everybody seems to call for reform, although agreement on just what that means in practice is hard to achieve. Yet, part of this “crisis” is only apparent because many of the early goals of socialism have become so much a part of the general consensus that they are hardly recognized as socialist any more. Among these are the need to overcome unemployment, improve the conditions of labor, create more egalitarian societies,ensure some form of welfare, and provide opportunities for all groups in society to express their o pinions.

Divisions abound about whether politics should be held to a higher moral standard or whether pragmatic considerations or realpolitik should prevail. The two poles are represented most conspicuously by Aristotle, for whom the proper aim of politics is moral virtue, and Machiavelli, whose prince in contrast exalted political pragmatism over morality. The fourteen contributors to this volume are predominantly arrayed on the Aristotelian end of the continuum, although several moral skeptics and pragmatists do enter the fray. These essays address perennial concerns in political and moral theory and underscore the rekindled yearning of many to hold the political realm to a higher standard despite the skepticism of dissenters who question the likelihood or even the desirability of success.

This book continues and revises the ideas of justice as fairness that John Rawls presented in A Theory of Justice but changes its philosophical interpretation in a fundamental way. That previous work assumed what Rawls calls a "well-ordered society," one that is stable and relatively homogenous in its basic moral beliefs and in which there is broad agreement about what constitutes the good life. Yet in modern democratic society a plurality of incompatible and irreconcilable doctrines -- religious, philosophical, and moral -- coexist within the framework of democratic institutions. Recognizing this as a permanent condition of democracy, Rawls asks how a stable and just society of free and equal citizens can live in concord when divided by reasonable but incompatible doctrines? This edition includes the essay "The Idea of Public Reason Revisited," which outlines Rawls' plans to revise Political Liberalism, which were cut short by his death.

In this book, Seumas Miller examines the moral foundations of contemporary social institutions. Offering an original general theory of social institutions, he posits that all social institutions exist to realize various collective ends, indeed, to produce collective goods. He analyzes key concepts such as collective responsibility and institutional corruption. Miller also provides distinctive special theories of particular institutions, including governments, welfare agencies, universities, police organizations, business corporations, and communications and information technology entities. These theories are philosophical and, thus, foundational and synoptic in character. They are normative accounts of a sampling of contemporary social institutions, not descriptive accounts of all social institutions, both past and present. Miller also addresses various ethical challenges confronting contemporary institutional designers and policy makers, including the renovation of the international financial system, the “dumbing down” of the media, the challenge of world poverty, and human rights infringements by security agencies combating global terrorism.

Slavoj Zizek was born in 1949 and is a Slovenian political philosopher, sociologist, and cultural critic best known for work with French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. Zizek writes on many topics, including the Iraq War, political correctness, globalization, human rights, and multiculturalism. His thought has received mixed receptions, from celebratory to deeply critical, but his politics are the element that most needs critical reassessment. Все хаотическое скопление социального вращается вокруг этого пористого объекта, этой одновременно непроницаемой и прозрачной реальности, этого ничто -- вокруг масс. Магический хрустальный шар статистики, они, наподобие материи и природных стихий, "пронизаны токами и течениями". Именно так, по меньшей мере, мы их себе представляем. Они могут быть "намагничены" -- социальное окружает их, выступая в качестве статического электричества, но большую часть времени они образуют "массу" в прямом значении слова, иначе говоря, все электричество социального и политического они поглощают и нейтрализуют безвозвратно. Они не являются ни хорошими проводниками политического, ни хорошими проводниками социального, ни хорошими проводниками смысла вообще. Все их пронизывает, все их намагничивает, но все здесь и рассеивается, не оставляя никаких следов. И призыв к массам, в сущности, всегда остается без ответа. Они не излучают, а, напротив, поглощают все излучение периферических созвездий Государства, Истории, Культуры, Смысла. Они суть инерция, могущество инерции, власть нейтрального. Именно в этом смысле масса выступает характеристикой нашей современности -- как явление в высшей степени имплозивное, не осваиваемое никакой традиционной практикой и никакой традиционной теорией, а может быть, и вообще любой практикой и любой теорией.

В работе "В тени молчаливого большинства" (A L’ombre des majorites silencieuses, ou la fin du social, 1978), критикуя термин "масса", Бодрийяр констатирует невозможность описания массы в положительных понятиях, поскольку любые интерпретации, как и любые попытки воздействия на массу, сталкиваются не с противодействием (которое можно было бы и интерпретировать, и направлять), но с инертностью как таковой. Собственно инертность, описываемая Бодрийяром то как абсолютная способность поглощения, то как абсолютная прозрачность, оказывается специфической массовой "стратегией", стратегическим не-действием. Всякий может оценить свою причастность так понятой "массе" по всеобщей способности превращать любое информационное воздействие в чистое зрелище, потребляемое без остатка и без реакции.
