A fifth of West Germany's post-1945 population consisted of ethnic German refugees expelled from Eastern Europe, a quarter of whom came from Silesia. As the richest territory lost inside Germany's interwar borders, Silesia was a leading objective for territorial revisionists, many of whom were themselves expellees. The Lost German East examines how and why millions of Silesian expellees came to terms with the loss of their homeland. Applying theories of memory and nostalgia, as well as recent studies on ethnic cleansing, Andrew Demshuk shows how, over time, most expellees came to recognize that the idealized world they mourned no longer existed. Revising the traditional view that most of those expelled sought a restoration of prewar borders so they could return to the east, Demshuk offers a new answer to the question of why, after decades of violent upheaval, peace and stability took root in West Germany during the tense early years of the Cold War.

Arbitration is an essential component in business. In an age when transparency is a maxim, important issues which the laws governing arbitration currently fail to address are the extent to which disclosure of information can be constrained by private agreement along with the extent to which the duty to preserve confidentiality can be stretched. Absent a coherent legal framework and extensive qualitative and quantitative data, it is equally difficult to suggest and predict future directions. This book offers a tool for attaining centralised access to otherwise fragmentary and dispersed material, as well as a comprehensive analysis and detailed exposition of the position in relation to confidentiality in arbitration in the jurisdictions of England, USA, France and Germany.

These days we look to Wikipedia for the truth. A neat illustration of this occurred not long before I sent up the manuscript of this book to the publishers. A pparently Gordon Brownhad claimed in a speech that he had much in common with the artist Titian, who did his best work in his dotage and reached the age of 90. A few days later, at 12.34 p.m. on 12 February 2009, someone at Conservative Central Office altered the Wikipedia article on Titian so as to reduce his age at death. This allowed David Cameron to go on the offensive at prime minister’s question time the same day. ‘The prime minister never gets his facts right,’ said Cameron. ‘You told us the other day you were like Titian aged 90. The fact is Titian died at 86.’ Two simple, yet potentially significant, propositions lie behind the themes of this book. The first, which I suppose as a historian I have always had in the back of my mind, is that the new – novel institutions, original ideas – usually turns out to be a lot older than we thought. The second, to which I have more recently come, is that, in cultural matters at least, working with one’s peers can get one further than trying to go it alone. I attempt here to illustrate and combine these two points of view by looking at certain historical group projects, and comparing them with another project that was born in the present century – Wikipedia. What sparked off my interest in these particular ‘communities of practice’ in history and on the Internet was the fact that I have myself for several years been a member of just such a community. In our village there is a flourishing archaeology/local history group whose members share the fruits of their efforts and collaborate in joint publications much as wikipedians do, though admittedly the international dimension is somewhat lacking. Recently we too have set up a ‘wiki’ site, www.greatayton.wikidot.com, to which anyone in the group may make a contribution. From these experiences it has been brought home to me that sharing and participation, while immensely enjoyable in themselves, are also just as efficient and productive a way to operate as is the more usual path of the solitary researcher. I want to thank Simon and Tom O’Sullivan and Janus Olsen for reading drafts of the book and making numerous useful suggestions. I should also like to thank my wife Hazel for her patience and moral support during the writing of it.

This volume contains the German National Reports on Public Law presented at the XVIIth Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law, Utrecht 2006. The articles provide an overview over recent developments and new issues in both European Constitutional and German Public Law from a German perspective and offer an in-depth analysis of the legal issues discussed. The book offers scholars as well as practitioners a sound basis for studies on a wide range of current and interesting issues in the field of comparative law.

German Idealism was one of the most fertile and important movements in the history of Western philosophy. This volume includes eleven chapters on all aspects and the period's most influential philosophers, including Kant and Hegel.

Soviet socialism was based on paradoxes that were revealed by the peculiar experience of its collapse. To the people who lived in that system the collapse seemed both completely unexpected and completely unsurprising. At the moment of collapse it suddenly became obvious that Soviet life had always seemed simultaneously eternal and stagnating, vigorous and ailing, bleak and full of promise. Although these characteristics may appear mutually exclusive, in fact they were mutually constitutive. This book explores the paradoxes of Soviet life during the period of "late socialism" (1960s-1980s) through the eyes of the last Soviet generation.
