This book is an investigation of the countercultural youth who ended up in the Religious Right movement of the late 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. It seeks to explain how and why such youth were attracted to evangelicalism and what countercultw tural values they took with them into what most historians have described as a purely reactionary movement. In analyziw ing this phenomenon, I have examined the Christian message of fundamentalists, Pentecostals, new evangelicals, and chariw ismatics prior to the rise of the counterculture in order to find connections between their biblically grounded worldview and the perspectives of sixties youth. After establishing that both the biblically grounded Christians and the countercultural youth shared certain profound beliefs, I next analyzed how the two subcultures blended together, especially in the Jesus movement, and how this mixing not only changed the nature of evangelicalism but also affected biblically grounded politics.
