Christopher Bennett presents a theory of punishment grounded in the practice of apology, and in particular in reactions such as feeling sorry and making amends. He argues that offenders have a 'right to be punished' - that it is part of taking an offender seriously as a member of a normatively demanding relationship (such as friendship or collegiality or citizenship) that she is subject to retributive attitudes when she violates the demands of that relationship. However, while he claims that punishment and the retributive attitudes are the necessary expression of moral condemnation, his account of these reactions has more in common with restorative justice than traditional retributivism. He argues that the most appropriate way to react to crime is to require the offender to make proportionate amends. His book is a rich and intriguing contribution to the debate over punishment and restorative justice.

Словник охоплює всі основні галузі права. Реєстровими одиницями є слова та словосполучення, характерні для англійської юридичної мови, а також абревіатури та латинські слова і вислови, що вживаються в юридичній літературі англійською мовою. Особливістю словника є наявність транскрипції заголовних слів і словосполучень.

Перед Вами – чотиримовний (англійсько-німецько-французько-український) “Словник термінології Європейського Союзу”, що став результатом термінологічної роботи проекту “Лабораторія наукового перекладу”. Словник було створено під час 14-х багатогодинних термінологічних семінарів, протягом яких експерти “Лабораторії” обговорювали вміщені до словника терміни та терміносполуки. Проект, що тривав у липні-грудні 2005 року, було здійснено громадською організацією “Молодіжний гуманітарний центр” за підтримки Міжнародного фонду “Відродження” та сприяння Національного університету Києво-Могилянська академія. Експертами “Лабораторії наукового перекладу” та учасниками семінарів стали фахівці з європейського права, спільних політик ЄС, міжнародної політики, світової економіки та міжнародних освітніх програм, а також професійні філологи, перекладознавці та термінознавці . Об’єднавши представників найширшого кола дисциплін, координатори “Лабораторії” прагнули відповісти на найбільший виклик перекладацького та термінотворчого процесу: його засадничу міждисциплінарність. Особливості цього словника Істотною рисою цього словника є його багатомовність. Нинішній Європейський Союз, що об’єднує 27 європейських країн, має 23 офіційні мови, кожна з яких відбиває частинку багатої та розмаїтої культури ЄС. Термінологія Європейського Союзу також не формувалася з огляду на одну-єдину мову: часто вона була результатом не тільки політичних, економічних і соціальних, але й лінґвістичних компромісів. З цієї причини у перекладі термінології ЄС неможливо уникнути компаративного підходу. Але якщо аналіз ключових понять терміносистеми ЄС в кожній з 23-х офіційних мов є завданням надмірним, то порівняння термінологічних версій, уживаних в трьох робочих мовах ЄС - англійській, французькій та німецькій – виявилося дуже корисним. Дуже часто саме порівняння різних мовних версій могло наштовхнути на те чи інше перекладацьке рішення. Англійські, німецькі та французькі версії було взято з офіційних текстів Європейського Союзу: джерел первинного та вторинного права ЄС, офіційних багатомовних словників Союзу та офіційних прес-релізів інституцій ЄС. Оскільки більшість цих документів мають різномовні паралельні версії, робота над Словником змогла використати справжній багатомовний потенціал термінології ЄС. Українські версії були витворені в результаті тривалих та гострих дискусій термінологічних семінарів “Лабораторії наукового перекладу”. Нинішнє видання складається з трьох частин. У першій вміщено, власне, чотиримовний Словник термінології ЄС, упорядкований за англійською абеткою. У другій ви знайдете німецький, французький та український покажчики, що дозволить здійснювати пошук за кожною з цих мов. З огляду на те, що проблеми транскрипції та транслітерації чужомовних імен залишається однією з ключових у справі перекладу, у третій ми вмістили список імен основних діячів нинішнього ЄС та його історії.
